Daesan Port is set to construct a multi-purpose container terminal (MPCT) for completion by 2020, investing a total of 43.8 billion won.
Daesan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries (Daesan ROOF) announced that it will break ground to construct a berth of MPCT at Daesan Port at a ceremony on upcoming Sept. 28.
Daesan has been operating a total of 31 berths including a container berth since it was nominated a trading port since 1991, supporting a logistics function of its petrochemical complex in the rear area. With the volume of exports to China surging over the recent few years, Daesan saw its container throughput rapidly grew to 113,000teu in 2016 from 64,000teu in 2013, from 82,000teu in 2014 and 105,000teu in 2015 respectively, urgently requiring expansion in the terminal facilities to deal with the potential high traffic growth in its industrial complex in the rear area.
Daesan ROOF has accordingly completed the design of Daesan’s MPCT facilities last month and plans to complete them over next three years by Sept. 2020 in a move to smoothly handle the port’s growing container traffic and revitalize its regional economies.
The MPCT to be newly built is capable of accommodating a 2,000teu class containership, and its annual container throughput is expected to grow to 250,000teu from the current capacity of 100,000teu more than twice.
