“Hyundai MM should expand its fleet by minimum 200,000teu” – KMI

Hyundai MM should expand its fleet by minimum 200,000teu within three years ahead in order to stay within alliance system, it is argued.

Chun Hyung-Jin (Ph.D), senior research fellow at KMI has pointed out in a latest report that Hyundai should expand its fleet by minimum 200,000teu in order to stay within 2M because its strategic alliance expires in March, 2020.

For the present moment, Hyundai holds a fleet of 460,000teu including chartered-in vessels, but has no newbuilding containerships under construction. Though Hyundai now unofficially remains in strategic alliance with 2M, the worries are that after March in 2020, it would not be easy for Hyundai to sustain strategic tie with 2M or other alliances based on its present fleet capacity unless expanded.

Containership capacity held by each ocean-going container line tied with alliances gets increasingly bigger through M&A, widening gap with that of Hyundai. After Hyundai’s containership capacity held lowest among those shipping lines tied with alliances, Yangming Line comes next lowest with 580,000teu in service growing to 650,000teu if newbuilding containerships on order included. Dr. Chun Hyung-Jin of KMI said that if Hyundai wishes to stay in 2M, it should expand its containership capacity in excess of 600,000teu at least close to that of Yangming.
