Daesun Shipbuilding starts construction for 19K class cabotage passenger ship
Tuesday, August 22, 2017, 09:46:33 Paul Yoon ckyoon7@paran.com
Daesun Shipbuilding unveiled on Aug. 16 that it started to construct a 19,000gt class cabotage passenger ship as ‘No. 1 Ship under Cabotage Passenger Ship Modernization Fund’ at a ceremony for account of Hanil Express to be deployed in Wando-Jeju service.

The passenger ship that the shipyard started to build is set for delivery in the second half of 2018 to run between Wando and Jeju. She measures 160m in length, and 24.8m in breadth as a large scale car ferry ship capable of lifting 1,200 passengers as well as 150 cars.

The newbuilding ship will cut her sailing time by 12%, and provide more competitive sea service with her passenger capacity increased by 26% as well as her car∙cargo capacity expanded by 36% in comparison with the existing ship ‘Hanil Car Ferry No. 1’. Also, the new ship’s fuel efficiency will improve by over 7% and greatly upgrade the shipping line’s profitability and contribute to reducing fuel cost.

The passenger ship is No. 1 Newbuilding Project under the government’s ‘Cabotage Passenger Ship Designing Task and Cabotage Passenger Ship Construction Support Fund Program’, which MOTIE (Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy) and MOF (Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries) have pursued since 2015 in a move to upgrade Korea’s cabotage service and secure cabotage transport safety. As a result of the government’s aggressive support, the passenger ship’s water test and ship’s design verification evidenced her efficiency and safety. Daesun Shipyard said that it has nominated cabotage passenger ship as type of ship for its continuous concentration, running a special task force team.

Daesun added: “Other Korean cabotage passenger sea service providers are very interested in Daesun’s construction of cabotage passenger ships. So far as the government’s support lasts, Daesun will continue to build cabotage passenger ships of high efficiency and high safety, making big contribution to passengers’ safety and to efficient cargo handling in future.
