“Drive complete overhaul at MOF” - New Minister Kim Young Choon
Wednesday, June 21, 2017, 20:51:31 Paul Yoon ckyoon7@paran.com
Newly taking the post of the first Minister for Oceans and Fisheries appointed by President Moon Jae-in, Minister Kim Young Choon pledged that the ministry should conduct a self-reform for its complete overhaul.

Taking the minister post at a ceremony on June 19 at the Sejong Government Complex, Minister Kim said with a stress that MOF (Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries), heavily criticized by people for ‘Sewol’ passenger ship sinking disaster and for Hanjin Shipping collapse, should make determined efforts to recreate the Oceans for renewal of everything at sea so that MOF can regain its reliability from the people.

All of MOF’s staff members should eliminate three “authorities” of conventional practice for self-reformation, self-protectionism to look after only oneself with a “wait-and-see” attitude, and the badge and the privilege of government officials, and they should try to develop new things by fresh methods, display their courage and dedication as the public servants, Minister Kim added.

Minister Kim came up with a vision to build up Korea as a “Global Shipping Power growing across the world” by making painful efforts. Also, he suggested the Ministry’s target to lift up GDP-contribution rate by oceans service (based on added value) from the ongoing 6.4% up to a 10% level.

To this end, MOF should aggressively push to strengthen the global edge in the business of oceans and fisheries by reconstructing maritime service industries and by industrializing the fishery food service of high-added-value, Minister Kim said. In addition, he will focus on bringing up various related new service industries including oceans-bio, oceans-tours for leisure, eco-friendly ship-marine service together with creation of related jobs while declaring the Ministry’s strong will to protect Korea’s marine territory, Minister Kim added.
