Pohang Yeongil New Port Corp. (PICT) has launched new service to Vietnam and Thailand.
PICT, Gyeongsangbuk-do provincial government and Pohang City Administration kicked off on Mar. 29 a regular container shipping service to Vietnam and Thailand at Pohang Yeongil New Port’s Container Terminal at a ceremony. KHS2 (Korea Hochiminh Thailand Service 2), jointly being provided by KMTC, Heung-A Shipping and Sinokor MM since Aug. 2014, first called at Pohang Yeongil New Port on Mar. 29 as additional service port.
‘Heung-A Hochiminh’ (built 2016), a containership of 1,800-teu class), which first called at Pohang Yeongil New Port in the day, will provide joint-service at a weekly frequency in partnership with other containerships of 1,800teu class. The calling ports for KH2 Service are Pohang (Wed), Ulsan (Wed), Busan (Thu), Ho Chi Minh (Tue), Lam Chabang (Fri), Bang Kok (Fri), Lam Chabang (Mon), Ho Chi Minh (Wed), Busan (Fri), and Pohang (Wed) in geographic rotation.
Pohang service has been provided by transshipment through Busan to date in absence of its direct calling. The direct calling at Pohang will save logistics cost by shortening delivery time in the way shippers and forwarders will increasingly can use Pohang in future. Also, Yeongil Port calling service and new direct Pohang service are expected to gain momentum in inducing cargoes from Daigu Metropolitan City and Gyeongbuk-Do Province.
At the launching ceremony, Deputy Governor Kim Jang-Ju of Gyeongbuk Province said: “What are most required to induce cargoes for PICT and revitalize its operation are the infrastructure and transport network to be built up. The new direct service is expected to enlarge the port’s infrastructure such as the entry railway, refrigerating-freezing logistics center, immigration system, and international passenger terminal so that PICT can be revitalized.”
