Busan New Port Terminal operators join hands for joint operation
Friday, December 30, 2016, 16:29:21 Paul Yoon ckyoon7@paran.com
Busan New Port (BNP) Terminal operators agreed to jointly use the terminal.

BPA (Busan Port Authority) announced that five terminal operators at BNP agreed on Dec. 29 to co-use BNP Terminal in a move to level up the competitive edge and operation efficiency at the terminal.

The real situation was that each of five terminal operators at BNP has used berths separately. When the terminal’s berths were congested, some concerned vessels were bound to wait for berths at anchorage at Busan. Because of the frequent congestion at BNP, the number of vessels awaiting open berths has continued to increase, reducing the competitive edge. The berth-waiting has been pointed out as the main factor which weakens Busan Port’s competitiveness.

Presently, each of terminal operators is coping with the berth congestion under a separate individual agreement with the terminal authority, but there is a limit in reducing the number of congested vessels.

As a result, BPA has arranged for five operators to jointly use berths in cooperation at BNP Terminal, preemptively leading the likely berth-awaiting vessels to reduce their standby hours.

BPA looks forward to the new agreement addressing the complaints from the shipping players who have faced congestion by using BNP Terminal on certain fixed days. The new arrangement is expected to contribute to inducing more transshipment cargoes for Busan Port and upgrading the port’s image.
