Incheon Port handles container traffic in Nov., record-high
Tuesday, December 27, 2016, 18:04:48 Paul Yoon ckyoon7@paran.com
IPA (Incheon Port Authority) announced on Dec. 25 that Incheon Port handled in last Nov. 252,513teu up 20.1% from 212,360teu in the corresponding period last year (on-year). It is a month after the port hit a record high of 251,000teu in last Oct., posting a new record high. The port handled 2,416,294teu over the year-to-Nov. on an accumulated basis, up 11.7% on-year.

IPA explains that the big increase is a result of its marketing efforts made slowly emerging from Industrial Complex and shippers in Gyeongin area. Also, it considers that the shipping demand for next New Year holiday has been early reflected in actual shipping, leading to container traffic growth.

According to IPA’s tally, Incheon marked imports of 128,963teu accounting for 51.1% of its total handling in Nov., up 23.6% (24,628teu) on-year. The port marked in Nov. exports of 120,902teu up 16.6% (17,211teu) on-year with transshipped and coastal container traffic posting 1,947teu and 702teu each.

By country, China contributed 157,666teu up 22.25 (28,633teu), up 26.5% for imports and up 17.4% exports each. Vietnam contributed 22,198teu, up 17.6% for imports and up 43.1% for exports. This is an increase of 27.0% (4,720teu).

The major cargoes that show high growth for imports in particular are fiber for textile manufacturing with sharing rate of 43%, parts for electric machinery (18%) and timber products (4%), among others.
