14,100-teu boxship calls at Busan Port
Thursday, March 15, 2012, 09:11:40 Paul Yoon ckyoon7@paran.com
The world-largest boxship is calling at Busan Port. Busan Port Authority (BPA) said that Uranus” of CSCL (14,100-teu, 150,853-dwt) is calling at KBCT (Korea Express Busan Container Terminal), Sinseondae Terminal, Busan Port.

The boxship measures 351m in length, 48.2m in width and 22.9m in height with her deck space wide three times a football field. She is slightly bigger than “Alexandra” built (14,036-teu) of MSC, the largest boxship that had ever called at Busan last year. The vessel built by Samsung Heavy last year is arriving at Busan Port in the day followed by Dalian, Shanghai and thereafter sailing for the Middle East area. She is set to unload 1,350-teu and load 1,050 at Busan.

Meantime “Umm Salal” of UASC (13,500-teu) called at KBCT last month. With Busan North Port keeping its draft of 16m by continuous dredging works to enable mega sized boxships to arrive here, the port has been recognized as a safe mega hub harbor with its draft accommodating any mega size boxships to berth safely anytime.

Amid the current trend of vessels becoming mega-sized with development of shipbuilding technologies, cargo growth and productivity increase, the annual arrivals of mega-sized ships at Busan Port recorded 15 ships in 2009 and rose to 40 in 2010 and stunningly jumped to 127 last year.

BPA keeps excess tonnage of mega-sized ships above 100,000-grt exempt from entrance and clearance fees, wharfage, anchorage fee, effective from 2010 in a move to induce the calls of mega-sized ships.

Park Ho-Cheol, marketing team leader, BPA, said: “The arrivals of mega-sized boxships bring the natural growth of cargo traffic to Busan Port. We will continuously strive to attract ultra large boxships by deepening the draft of the port.”
