MSC launches new service to Gwangyang Port
Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 16:03:56 Paul Yoon ckyoon7@paran.com
The world-2nd largest container player, MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) is deploying a very large boxship of 14,000-teu to launch new service to Gwangyang Port. (GP). Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (YGPA) said on Feb. 28 that MSC opens new Europe service from Korea Express Terminal, Gwangyang Port (GP). It is 5 years since 2007 that GP adds to Europe service.

MSC deploys 23 boxships of 14,000-teu class each to call at Antwerp of Belgium, Felixstowe of UK, Rotterdam of Netherland, St. Petersburg of Russia and Gwangyang of Korea for a weekly sailing. This expands GP’s current 4 weekly sailings from GP to 5 weekly sailings with new annual container throughput of above 100,000-teu expected. In particular, YGPA said that the box movement generated from inland areas of Russia through St. Petersburg, Russia’s largest port and 2nd largest city, is expected to sharply increase linking GP.

Park Young-Jong, marketing team leader of YGPA, said: “In the past, major shippers from Jeonam areas including Yeochun Industrial Complex have relied on Busan Port in absence of service linking major Russian ports with GP. The new service launched from GP is not only expected to save logistics cost but also to make big contribution to increasing box traffic throughput in GP.”

Lee Sang-Jo, president of YGPA, said, “We will launch presentation of our new service by touring around at various areas in Gyeonggi Province, Chungcheong North and South Province and industrial complexes in Gwangju City and Jeonnam Province, and will conduct joint marketing activities with the terminal operator here in a move to actively attract box traffic into GP.”

YGPA is set to open a commemorative ceremony for “MSC Filomena” of 145,000-dwt class) calling at Korea Express Terminal, GP on Mar. 1 for her maiden voyage.
